Lore -- When opportunity strikes... go confidently in the direction of your dreams, keep your face towards the sun, and never forget you have wings!
This series is a rearrangement / reconfiguration of abstract shapes cut out from my sketchbook. I then mounted them between layers of resin and top of painted maps to tell a story. The collection uses four distinct panels, each (13" x13") titled with pieces of familiar "proverbs" to dissect how these simple maxims, learned in childhood, become an internalized "lore" that guides our adult lives. These abstract figures created from my sketchbook scraps almost take the form of petroglyph-like symbols.
When Opportunity strikes… captures the nostalgia for potential—where a sudden chance (the "strike") is embraced without reservation.
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams… is the nostalgia for certainty—the memory of a time when the "direction" seemed clear and unwavering, before the paths became complicated.
Keep your face towards the sun… addresses the nostalgia for simplicity—the comforting but often unrealistic ideal of maintaining a purely positive outlook despite life's complexities.
And never forget, you have wings! … represents the distillation of the earlier lessons. It captures the nostalgia for courage—the quiet, residual strength drawn from remembered parental or mentor affirmations.
